Joy Keenan was to Max and Ruth Keenan. She had an older brother, named Kyle. At the time she was about three years old, her parents had to change their names, as well as the names of Joy and Kyle.
Joy Keenan became Temperance Brennan. Her brother became Russ. And her parents became Matthew and Christine.
At the time, Temperance was much too young to remember all of this.
For the next twelve years, the Brennan family lived as normally as possible. Though Temperance was somewhat anti-social and awkward, she was also very intelligent. She evidently had a steep learning curve and an interest in Science, as her father taught Science in a nearby Chicago High School. She even attended an Organic Science class in her youth.
In fact, everything seemed to be going perfectly fine until the Christmas Temperance was about fifteen years old, her parents said goodbye to her one morning and then never came back.
Temperance was in mourning over not knowing exactly what happened to them for days.
Until Christmas morning, when she found all her and her brother's Christmas presents under the tree and the house decorated.
Thinking her parents had returned, Temperance was naturally excited.
That is, until she found out that all this was set up by her older brother, Russ, nineteen at the time, who wanted to make the day special.
This only served to make Temperance more upset and she refused to open her presents, causing her brother pain and to eventually leave to work out West.
Being only fifteen, Temperance was put into Foster Care until her grandfather could get her out.
She faced many hardships, including abuse, in her Foster Homes, until she turned eighteen and went off to college.
